Strong Feedback From Chromium Webinar

When IBT Safety Trainer/Consultant Tom Smith put the word out about Hexavalent Chromium standard compliance, he went modern.

In connection with the IBT Training Department, Smith led a one hour training session, distributed to an audience spread out at numerous locations, using a web based seminar tool ("webinar") to get his message across.

Health Effects of CR(VI) The title: Effectively Comply With the New Requirements of CrVI.

"With new compliance standards being mandated by OSHA, and with the high levels of hazard represented by Hexavalent Chromium, many job sites are at risk for both OSHA action and worker health problems and complications.

"CrVI is some pretty nasty stuff – but adhering to the rules and protecting workers is not overly complicated. The safety team and the plant management group just have to know and understand the rules. By conducting a one-hour webinar, we were able to get these people up to speed pretty effectively.

"Doing the training via a webinar was a very efficient way to get the word out quickly, accurately and easily. I am sure that we will do many more of them in the future," Smith reports.

CR(VI) Smith, a former OSHA trainer and highly experienced safety expert, covered the topic from background through the details of a proper compliance program.

Topics included: characteristics of Cr(VI); health effects of exposure; compliance; potential harm from exposure (skin, respiratory tract, allergic reactions, and, under chronic, long term exposure, possible lung cancer.)

The new OSHA standards were in the Federal Register, February 28, 2006 and apply to General Industry (29 CFR, 1910.1026); Construction (29 CFR, 1926.1126); Shipyards (29 CFR, 1915.1026). The new standards, which are effective starting November 27, are a performance based standard.

Audience response was positive. One pleased reaction was received from David Eggers, Environmental Specialist. He noted: "To sum it up, I would say Mr. Smith did a very good job of condensing several hundred pages of Federal Register preamble into an understandable and usable one-hour training session. The information gathered from the seminar will greatly assist me in implementing the Hexavalent Chromium standard in our workplace."

Broadcast through the channels of Webex, the IBT Hexavalent Chromium webinar is available on a recorded basis, for a fee.
