Tarzan Mean Business
Perhaps the jungle is an overused metaphor. "Life is a jungle." "Business is a jungle." "The Zoo is a jungle."
But for Craig Campbell and IBT Media Group, working with Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and their 2006 Small Business Celebration and Awards Program, "jungle" was just the image they needed. And, they ran with it.
Not content to just talk about a jungle, IBT Media created one (more or less) in their studio. Then they assembled a cast of actors to tell a fable about business strategy and ways to survive in today's competitive market space.
The resulting little film, reminiscent of the old silent movies since it uses almost no dialogue to get its message across, tells the story of an entrepreneur. His name, oddly enough, is Tarzan and he has a small fruit and snack stand on a busy corner in the middle of the jungle. Business is good.
One day, however, he notices that a customer has become a competitor. Thus begins an escalation of strategic moves and counter-moves, as the two little businesses strive to outdo each other.
The "fable" has a moral: competition hones the edge of business, leading to an organization having to stretch and grow to survive, and ultimately, succeed.
The rumble in the jungle vignette, titled Tarzan's Snack Shop, was shown at the Chamber's Small Business Awards Celebration on May 19. The presentation included close-ups on all ten finalists, which had also been produced by IBT Media. These programs segments were filmed using The Kansas City Zoo in Swope Park as the backdrop.
At the luncheon, Hoefer Wysocki Architects LLC was named Small Business of the Year and won the coveted Mr. K Award, in honor of the memory of the late Ewing M. Kauffman.
And, the Tarzan Show made its point, while garnering much applause and a healthy share of laughs.
