It All Started During The Civil War
"A twist drill, in which the spiral grooves are so cut or formed that the curvature of that side of the groove which makes the cutting edge is very nearly in the direction of the radius, and when the drill is ground at the ordinary angle presents a straight and acute angled edge or lip to the metal or other substance that is to be drilled."
This is the crux of how Stephen A. Morse of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, presented his application for a patent for "Improvement In Drill Bits." The application, dated April 7, 1863, was granted the next year.
Prior to the invention by Morse the standard for drilling was lower: "The common drill scrapes the metal that is to be drilled, while my drill cuts the metal and discharges the chips and borings without clogging," he also stated on his patent application.
The man with the drill started something that has grown into single source supplier of machining application solutions - a complete range of cutting tools. Named MORSE® Cutting Tools, the company has recently become affiliated with IBT General Industrial Supply.
