Longtime client of IBT Media, Applebee's chairman and CEO Lloyd L. Hill, was honored as Operator of the Year at the 2005 Multi-Unit Foodservice Operators conference. The award was based on a vote of Hill's peers: readers of the leading trade magazine Nation's Restaurant News.

Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar is the largest casual-dining chain in the US. It has more than 1,700 restaurants and 140,000 employees. Annual sales are about $4.0 billion, and they have risen from $1.82 billion when Hill became chief executive in 1998. During his tenure. Applebee's stock price has quadrupled when adjusted for dividends and stock splits (NASDAQ symbol APPB).

Over the past several years, IBT Media has worked with Applebee's more than ten times. Most of the work has been part of Applebee's training programs, for both front of the house (servers) and back of the house (kitchen and prep).

Topics have included the introduction of Applebee's Carside To Go (You Call It In. We Bring It Out."!), an innovative program that allows customers to place telephone orders and then pick up their food without getting out of their cars.

This started as a pilot program and is now being introduced nationwide.

Other topics have included a catering initiative, Applebee's Anywhere"!, another innovative service introduction. With this program for people gatherings, a guest may order food in portions large enough to feed five or more people.

Other projects involving IBT Media have included training on food safety, lunch service tips, beverage sales and service, and responsible service of alcohol.

IBT Media has also worked on internal communications video shows and assisted the company with national public relations, including satellite feeds to all major broadcast news operations.

"We are especially proud of our work with Applebee's," Craig Campbell of IBT Media confides. "We have helped them in training - and it seems clear that training helps make them as successful as they have become. I have heard Lloyd Hill put it this way: 'we're a people company serving food, not a food company serving people.' With that mentality, they must invest in making their people better - and they have allowed us to help them do so."

The last word, however, belongs to Lloyd Hill. During his award acceptance, he said: "Every time someone comes in - if the food is right, if the emotional connection is right, if the experience is right - people will leave Applebee's better than when they came in. If we do that, we'll really change the world, one guest at a time."
