Training That Sticks With You
With IBT's commitment to training, there is nearly continuous activity in the training room. Customers, vendors, branch employees, CDC staff and others troop in regularly for educational and informative sessions. The training room is a busy place and most of IBT's training programs are conducted there.
When Loctite® came to IBT in early November, they held two complete days of instruction. The first day was for IBT internal people. On the second day, Loctite led a customer training day.
What was most noteworthy about the two days of training was not the quality of the instruction (High, presented by three Loctite field reps). Nor was it the breadth of products covered (Exhaustive, as Loctite seems to have something for just about any problem one is likely to have in an industrial situation.). It wasn't even the extensive hands-on experience that each of the students received (Up to their elbows, it seemed like, using the various products on real materials to see how each worked and was properly applied.)
No, according to Gary Hense of IBT Training, what most impressed him was the overall environment that Loctite created.
"They came into our training room and totally took it over. Not only did the Loctite guys bring lots of products and lots of samples for the students, they also had extensive training manuals that they provided for all attendees.
"But," Hense continued, "what really impressed me was that they created a total environment. They decorated the room thoroughly. Every table top was covered. They used posters from their racing program and their advertising. They hung checkered flags. It was fun and it was festive."
Rick Gates of Loctite explained the situation: "Since we want to have a strong practical training session, we need to let people put our products to the test. That means we have to be particularly careful about preventing damage. After all, much of our stuff is designed to hold firmly forever. We don't want to glue things to the furniture. Because of Loctite's extensive racing background, the checkered flag motif is a natural. The rest of the décor we just do for fun.
"But, make no mistake: this is a very serious training. We are teaching distributor people how to specify, demonstrate, use and sell our extensive line. And, we are teaching MRO professionals how to cut maintenance time and costs, how to increase the reliability of their equipment, how to eliminate chronic failures and how to increase productivity. We sum it up simply: the workshop is all about using proven proactive techniques to prevent the unpredictable.
"The fun part of it is just a bonus for all the people there - including those of us from Loctite."
