Lovejoy Says
"Can-Do" to Food Plant
A leading food processor, whose annual output represents millions of cans of food, was plagued with minor but annoying problems that were causing them to experience extended maintenance problems and higher-than-usual costs.
With margins tight and customer service expectations high, they were looking for ways to find additional advantages.
A complete analysis of the couplings they were using uncovered big opportunities to improve efficiencies through targeted preventive maintenance.
The analysis found process pumps in the kitchen and can seamers in the cannery using a standard sleeve coupling of cast iron flanges and a rubber sleeve. When this type of sleeve fails, it takes a chunk of time to change out. The flanges have to be moved for element removal and washdown chemicals, critical for cleanliness in food plants, were causing the coupling hubs to rust onto the shafts.
At quarterly PM cycles, the company changed these elements. The job took five or more hours per pump. With eight pumps just in one processing area, it was a terribly time-consuming task for the maintenance crew. It put them behind the eight ball in the rest of the PM drill.
In addition, rusty equipment, even in small parts like couplings, makes it hard when the USDA comes to inspect.
Lovejoy had an answer: replace these couplings with stainless steel hubs and the Jaw-In-Shear 6 Pin element and ring.
The Lovejoy stainless steel hubs are less expensive than traditional stainless steel couplings and are an excellent rust-preventer. The Lovejoy Jaw-In-Shear 6 Pin is made using a urethane, wrapping-style element (much longer lived than their previous equipment) coupled with a #347 stainless steel locking ring.
With easy, tool-free assembly, using this coupling eliminated any need to move the flanges for element replacement. Not only did the planned maintenance go much faster, premature failures were greatly reduced. The time previously spent on unscheduled maintenance resulted in a 95% increase in efficiency for those applications.
Today, replacing the element in these horizontal, centrifugal pumps, common to all canning plants, takes perhaps five minutes In addition, using stainless steel couplings helps these plants comply with USDA regulations, and requires but a fraction of the previous time spent on maintenance. It makes Lovejoy's coupling indispensable to their operations."
