5 Irrefutable Arguments
For Centralized Lube Systems
Ron Puckett, Manager of IBT Lube Services, reports that the reasons to use centralized lubrication systems are hard to ignore. They target the very core values that any general manager, maintenance supervisor, production manager --or even an accountant --can embrace wholeheartedly.
The Favorable Five are:
1. Increased Productivity
Longer machine life results when equipment is properly lubricated.
It is not necessary to stop a machine to lubricate it.
Machinery runs when needed, with no unplanned down time.
2. Reduced Operating Costs
Millwright labor and bearing replacement costs are cut.
Power costs are lowered, because friction is decreased.
Less labor time is spent oiling the equipment.
3. More Efficient Lubrication
Lubrication is applied carefully, in correct small amounts, when required.
Every bearing is lubed properly. No skipping, no under lubing.
No waste through overlubrication.
4. Safety
No need to climb around or over machinery that is running
Inaccessible bearings (hazards, height, heat) are properly and safely lubricated.
5. Better Housekeeping
Machines are kept cleaner. No lube spills or excess around machines -- which prevents slippery conditions and possible product contamination.
Puckett also points out that, according to studies conducted by bearing manufacturer SKF, lubrication problems account for more than half of the failures experienced by bearings. Specifically, Inadequate lubrication causes 34.4% of the failures, and Contamination accounts for an additional 19.6%. (see chart)
