No Fun In the Sun!
Working hard all day outdoors in the hot summer sun will make you hot, tired, dirty, thirsty and hungry. But be careful. It can also make you seriously ill - or even dead.
No doubt about it, out door work in summer has special hazards: heat, sun, even various insect bites and illnesses.
Sun
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the sun can cause premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, cataracts, and skin cancer. All UV rays are dangerous. You are at higher risk if you burn easily, spend a lot of time outdoors, or have numerous, irregular or large moles, freckles; fair skin; or blond, red, or light brown hair.
Cover up. Wear tightly woven clothing that you can't see through. Use sunscreen. A sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 blocks 93 percent of UV rays. Be sure to follow application directions on the bottle or tube. Wear a hat. A wide brim hat, not a baseball cap, works best because it protects the neck, ears, eyes, forehead, nose, and scalp. Wear UV-absorbent shades. Sunglasses don't have to be expensive, but they should block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB radiation. Before you buy, read the product tag or label. IBT Safety has a full line of safety eye wear that also has full UV protection. Limit exposure. UV rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Heat
It is the heat AND the humidity. Any hot work environment offers risk for heat-related illness. Be careful.
HIGH TEMPERATURE + HIGH HUMIDITY + PHYSICAL WORK = HEAT ILLNESS
Hydration: Drink plenty of water before you get thirsty. About a cup every 15 to 20
minutes should be enough.
Air-Flow: Wear light, loose-fitting, breathable clothing - cotton is good.
Shade: Get into a shaded area on frequent short breaks, and let your body cool down.
Appetite: Eat smaller meals before working. Avoid caffeine and alcohol or large amounts of sugar. These make the body lose water and increase the risk for heat illnesses.
Awareness: Understand the dangers and symptoms of heat ate work. Work with a buddy - and watch out for each other.
If you are taking medication, make sure that heat exposure does not complicate the risks.
Pay special attention while using a respirator or wearing protective clothing. These can greatly increase the chances of heat stress.
