How Suite It Is
Turning a run-of-the mill conference room into a state-of-the art high definition video suite is no mean feat. But IBT Media willingly accepted the opportunity to do it - and do it quickly
The conference room was converted from a non-productive asset to a revenue generating, impressive edit suite in just 45 days. The construction required a total makeover: new doorway placement, new walls, new floors, new furniture, and a whole impressive array of new equipment.
The construction itself was pretty straightforward. The technological part of the project was a bit more involved.
Once the carpentry and cabinetry of the room was basically in place, the techies got to take over.
They had a lot of work to confront.
"Under the best of circumstances, it's tough to get a bunch of new, sophisticated and complex electronic equipment all moved in, set up and operating properly," IBT Media's Joe Biesterfeld confides. "When the job includes integrating a series of components so that they are all working together the right way, that makes the job even more challenging.
"When you add the fact that the new stuff has to work with a bunch of previously installed stuff, we really all had a job with a high rating for difficulty."
The IBT Media team and their outside assisters were equal to it. They made their deadline, held to the budget, and produced a facility first class in every respect: technically, aesthetically, creatively. It is even comfortable.
The new high definition video edit suite at IBT Media occupies about 300 square feet. It contains a complex of technical equipment housed in several computers, including an Apple Macintosh G5 housing Final Cut editing software, a graphics computer and an Avid Adrenaline Digital Nonlinear Accelerator system. A high definition video deck is also housed in the same cabinet. This cabinet is self contained and operates silently while preventing heat build up in the suite.
A complex of keyboards control the equipment and six monitors offer views. There is a 42 inch HD plasma screen on the wall for detailed viewing. A complete audio system includes a fourteen channel mixing board, four speakers and a sub-woofer.
Other peripheral equipment includes a video oscilloscope and a switching panel.
An upholstered leather couch and matching side chair add to the client creature comforts. Style points are scored by a small Oriental area rug, Art Deco side tables, track lighting and an intriguing fish lamp. (Think lava lamp with fish, instead).
Hidden from view, but critical to the operation is a wiring harness fully six inches in diameter. Running at least forty feet from starting point to final connection, the total length of the wiring inside it exceeds five miles.
The cable is needed to connect all the equipment in the new suite with the pre-existing control room and tech center. That complex includes 6 Terabytes of storage, which is in addition to the dedicated storage in each of the various operating computer systems.
Although the new high definition suite is the latest addition to the IBT Media complex, it is only slightly newer than the recently renovated DVD authoring facility.
That also has a Macintosh G5, Final Cut and the latest DVD authoring software and support equipment.
The two newest facilities are just the latest expressions of IBT Media's commitment to staying ahead of the technology curve and investing in their business.
The results of combining high tech equipment with trained and dedicated people is apparent with each new project and challenge that they undertake.
The work is not only making a difference for IBT Media clients such as Applebee's and SKF - it is also showing up on home television sets during Oprah Winfrey's show and on the History Channel.
