Protecting Compressors
When environmental concerns necessitated a change away from Freon® based refrigerants, an unexpected consequence appeared in excess wear and premature deterioration inside the compressors. The ammonia compounds now being used do not have the inherent anti-wear properties found in the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) previously used.
As a result, significantly different lubrication practices and lubricants have to be used to preserve and extend the life of refrigeration unit compressors.
Because ammonia can cause excessive wear to moving parts in the compressor, such as bearings, piston rings or vanes, the lubricants used should be formulated with higher quality Group II or better paraffinic base stocks and contain improved anti-wear protection.
Fortunately, IBT stays at least one step ahead - by offering CryoGuard Plus Series Fluids from JAX.
Here's the inside story:
Ammonia's high heat of compression results in dramatically higher discharge temperatures. These temperatures can be almost twice that of a Freon system providing the same refrigeration effect. To protect the compressor from excessive sludge and deposit at these temperatures, it is extremely important to use lubricants, like JAX CryoGuard, containing robust antioxidant protection. JAX offers outstanding long-term thermal and oxidative stability.
JAX CryoGuard Series lubricants have outstanding anti-wear performance, high VI (viscosity index), extend compressor component life, works to minimize oil breakdown, gumming and deposits -- and also minimizes oil carryover to provide maximum cooling efficiency. Additional protection against an occasional air leak at low suction pressure is provided by JAX Cryoguard Plus Series' enhanced oxidation and rust inhibition characteristics.
Refrigeration oils can be carried out of the compressor by the hot refrigerant gas to the low-temperature side of the refrigeration system. Formerly, oil in the evaporator was carried back to the compressor due to its miscibility, or solubility of oil and Freon. In ammonia systems, oil reaching the low-temperature side remains in the evaporator, interfering with effective heat transfer, until it is drained and discarded.
CryoGuard is offered in two flavors (ISO 32 and ISO 68) and six package sizes: 5 gallon, 16 gallon, 30 gallon, 55 gallon and 110 gallon and 275 gallon totes.
