As part of its continuing work with the History Channel, IBT Media has joined the Navy, at least momentarily. The IBT Media group, equipped with full video equipment package, landed on USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) which was doing maneuvers off the coast of California.
The carrier operation, a flight from NAS North Island (Coronado, California) on January 29 to the flight deck, was the mode of transportation for a video shoot on the Reagan for part of the on-going Modern Marvels series on the History Channel.
This episode is scheduled to air on March 6, 2008. IBT Media group departed the following day on a return flight on a US Navy C-2A aircraft.
"The whole experience was incredible," IBT Media's Gary Hense reports. "I was particularly impressed at the energy, enthusiasm - and most of all - the professionalism of the US Navy personnel I met."
The Reagan will be included in part of the third episode of a series on the "world's strongest." The scenes on the Reagan highlight the carrier's four deck edge elevators.
It is easy to see how they earned their way into a show about the world's strongest: each of the four deck edge elevators can lift two aircraft from the huge hangar bay to the 4.5-acre flight deck in seconds.
Their max lift capacity is 200,000 lbs. with an average lift cycle of 10 seconds. On the other Nimitz class carriers of similar design, the maximum elevator lift is 140,000 lbs.
The deck edge elevators are not alone in their impressive performance characteristics. The whole modern US Navy aircraft carrier is an impressive beast. Be sure to catch the details of the Reagan and see for yourself on Modern Marvels when it airs March 6, 2008.
