Productivity improvement is both the holy grail of modern management and the gift that keeps on giving. Managers – in all industries, in any country, at any time – can always look for ways to increase productivity within their facilities and within their workforce.
The great thing about productivity is that you really can never have too much improvement. The new excellence achieved today becomes the standard to be exceeded in tomorrow's quest for more, more, more.
Productivity doesn't care where you find it.
It can be as basic as improving the attitude among workers. Or as complex as introducing radical new technologies into the workplace.
Sometimes, all you need to do is tidy up the working environment, taking away distractions, time wasters, unneeded steps and movement. Workers who can operate more efficiently are likely to get more done.
Sometimes, the tidying up may have to do with work rules, policies, traditional and outmoded ways of working.
Again, fixing these leaks can improve productivity, too.
You'd be surprised as to how something as simple as properly adjusting any machinery that workers are using can truly make a difference. People learn to work around minor maladjustments, which happen a little bit at a time. Eventually, the whole machine is off kilter – and putting it right makes a big difference.
