Running With Both Shoes On

During the 1960 Rome Olympics, Ethiopian Abebe Bikila, running barefoot, won the marathon in a record time of 2:15:16.2, becoming the first African to win an Olympic gold medal.

In Tokyo in 1964, he entered the marathon, this time wearing Asics^® shoes. He entered the stadium alone to the cheers of 70,000 spectators. Bikila finished the marathon in a new record time of 2:12:11.2.

Two shoes. No shoes. Same result. One variation that Abebe Bikila never tried was one shoe on and one shoe off, for obvious reasons.
